Luminance adaptation is a powerful technique that enables observers to detect subtle changes in a stimulus. It is well known that the presence of Lambertian surface increases the efficiency of luminance adaptation for detecting shifts in surface reflectance [L. R. G. Moreno, C.A. Rode, N. Moullin, B.J. Lew, Perception 21 (1992) 885]. The effects of surface complexity on adaptation has been investigated in few papers that use very simple geometries [Y. He & R.G. Vaughan, Vision Res. 35 (1995) 55]. In this paper, we demonstrate that for stimuli with moderately complicated surfaces, the presence of Lambertian surfaces yields dramatic effects on luminance adaptation. We find that increasing the number of surface elements with non-Lambertian surfaces is accompanied by larger adaptation effects than simply increasing the number of surface elements with Lambertian surfaces. We show that these results are well described by a simple model that relates adaptation to the intensity distribution along the direction of the light, rather than to the distribution of illuminance across the retina.1.
