Musical instruments can now be completely emulated with the help of the right computer hardware and software components, eliminating the need for them in musical compositions almost entirely. However, specialized VST plugins can also be used to enhance audio input in real time for devices connected to the PC, and Hexagon ’85 is dedicated to drum sets.
Since it’s merely a plugin, the target computer needs to be fitted with a suitable host such as energyXT. Once integrated it automatically routes itself to input and output devices, and interaction with any connected devices or virtual controllers can start right away.
All audio filters and effects are handled from the control panel. Each drum comes with its own set of knobs, with targeted components like Bass Drum, Snare, Low Tom, Medium Tom, High Tom, Hi-Hat, Crash and Ride Cymbals, represented by corresponding abbreviation tags.
Apart from the two cymbals and Hi-Hat, all drums can be modulated from knobs which stand for tone, fine tuning, sweep, noise, attack, and decay, whereas all items benefit from the level and pan knobs. Toms, on the other hand come with two toggleable sequences at the press of a button. When it comes to cymbals, external files can be imported for extra effects.
